Tissamaharama has one of the most significant historical and cultural legacies in southern Sri Lanka, tracing its heritage to the 3rd century BCE as a prominent settlement of the ancient Ruhuna Kingdom.

Considered a sacred and strategic city, it is home to the massive Tissamaharama Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas on the island, and numerous archaeological sites that reflect its royal and religious past. Today, the town is also celebrated as a gateway to some of Sri Lanka’s most famous natural attractions, including Yala National Park, renowned for its leopards and diverse wildlife, and Udawalawe National Park, famous for its elephants. The serene Tissa Wewa reservoir and nearby religious sites such as Kataragama further enrich its cultural and spiritual identity, making Tissamaharama both a historical heartland and a centre for eco-tourism and pilgrimage.
