Paragliding

Paragliding in Sri Lanka is an incredible way to experience the island's diverse landscapes from a breathtaking aerial perspective. While not as widespread as some other adventure sports, it is a thrilling activity that is growing in popularity, with several key locations offering tandem flights for visitors.

The Experience

Paragliding is a free-flying adventure where you glide through the air in a lightweight, foot-launched glider, without any rigid structure. It's an activity that combines a rush of adrenaline with a serene, bird's-eye view of the world below. For visitors, tandem flights are the most common and safest option. You will be securely harnessed to a professional, certified pilot who will handle all the flight controls, allowing you to simply relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery.

Where to Paraglide in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's varied topography provides ideal conditions for paragliding, from coastal breezes to mountain thermals.

  • Ella: Arguably the most popular paragliding destination in Sri Lanka, Ella's stunning hill country landscape is perfect for a flight. You'll launch from a high point and soar over lush tea plantations, dramatic valleys, and iconic landmarks like the Nine Arch Bridge and Ella Rock. The views here are truly spectacular.

  • Kandy: The central mountainous region around Kandy, particularly the Dumbara Valley, offers ideal conditions for thermal soaring. You can glide above verdant hills and traditional villages, taking in the panoramic vistas of the central highlands.

  • Bentota/Kosgoda: For a coastal paragliding experience, the areas around Bentota and Kosgoda are excellent choices. Here, you'll be able to fly over golden beaches, palm-fringed coastlines, and the clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean, often with the added thrill of flying with a motor on your paraglider (known as paramotoring).

  • Nuwara Eliya: This hill country town also offers opportunities for cross-country paragliding, allowing experienced pilots to cover great distances and enjoy the stunning scenery.

The Best Time to Go

Paragliding is a weather-dependent activity. The best time for paragliding in the hill country (Ella and Kandy) is generally during the dry seasons, from December to March and June to September. For coastal sites like Bentota, conditions are often favorable during the period from November to April. It is always best to check with a local operator for the most up-to-date weather conditions.
